Investigation and inquest
On 25th January 2020 I commenced an investigation into the death of Lesley POWELL. The investigation concluded at the end of the inquest on 8th March 2021. The conclusion of the inquest was ROAD TRAFFIC COLLISION
Circumstances of the death
Lesley Powell who was born on the 23rd January 1960, was walking home with her partner along the A2100, Battle Hill in a southerly direction. In the process of crossing the road, she was hit by a motor vehicle, sustaining significant injury. She died at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on the 4th January 2020 at 14:20 hours.
Coroner’s concerns
(1) There is no safe crossing point on the A2100 Battle Hill, Battle, East Sussex in the vicinity of the Esso/Tesco Express Garage and shop
(2) Between August 2016 and December 2019 there have been seven incidents of which:-
i) Two were fatal (in one of which another pedestrian had life changing injuries)
ii) Two included serious injury
iii) Three included slight injuries
Four of the incidents occurred in the vicinity of the section of road between St Mary’s Villas and the entrance to the filling station.
